Studio apartment

Quality housing

are small, single-level living quarters intended for use by an individual. They are designed around relatively large single room incorporating the features of a living room , dining room , and kitchen . Some studio apartments have a seperate or semi-partitioned bedroom , but usually this forms part of the main living space.

Features

They may have a toilet and possibly shower or bath, or these facilities may be shared with other dwelling units.

Locations

Studio apartments are sometimes found in renovated or remodelled warehouses and other industrial buildings.

Terms

They are sometimes offered for short term rental as holiday accommodation.

Costs

In some housing markets, studio apartments relatively low cost and thus popular with young people and those with low or unsteady income.

In some housing markets they are rented on a month-to-month basis, where they are priced for college students and other young people who have recently left home. In other markets studio apartments are considerably more upmarket.

Origin

Note that the term comes from the French language/French word "appartement" (meaning ?) and is an Americanism . The word is seldom used in the United Kingdom and most Commonwealth of Nations/Commonwealth countries, which use the term "flat" in its stead. In Australia , however, the term is growing in popularity, especially for recently constructed up-market dwellings in inner-city areas. In some parts of the United States a studio apartment is called an efficiency apartment .
